Artist Statement
Explaining feelings is hard. Painting feelings on the other hand, now that's a horse of a different color (get it?). My work, consisting of acrylic and mixed media abstract paintings on canvas and paper, starts and ends with feelings. My process is organic, intuitive, and deeply authentic. It is also very much informed by my work as a therapist and social worker in the way I value self-exploration, the validity of human experience, and a good sense of humor about it because life is short and I find it helps to not take one's self too seriously. Sometimes my process begins with feelings inspired by an experience or place, and other times by processing feelings I can’t put into words until the painting is done. The titles of my paintings along with the work itself help to tell the viewer an entire story in a single word or a phrase. The story begins as my own, but as a non-representational story open to broad interpretation, it ultimately becomes the viewer's story as well. We're in it together, folks. My hope for viewers is that my art will invite them to be a curious observer of their own inner worlds, as it does for me.
Bio
Sarah Sack is a self-trained abstract painter and clinical social worker based in Southern California. She works in a mix of acrylic paint, watercolor, pastel, ink, and graphite with a penchant for bright colors. Her paintings are informed by her work as a therapist and social worker in their exploration of the nuance and complexity of human emotion. She uses color, texture, and an organic quality of movement as a way of stepping out of the hyper-verbal expression that dominates the day-to-day, and into the visual, visceral, and non-verbal communication of emotions and experiences through art.
Sarah has had rotating collections of work featured by small businesses throughout the Venice area and has been featured in a weekly curatorial article by Art in Res describing her work as “fully immers[ive]” and reflective of “chaos, unity, and totality”. Since returning to her love of art in 2017 she has exhibited in and won awards in juried group shows, and has developed a steady following of collectors and pipeline of commissions.
Sarah’s work continues to be inspired by how she processes the world around her and internalizes influences of travel, music, literature, and film. Her hope is that for viewers, her exploration of color, shape, and texture will be a universally accessible way of gently holding an experience in front of themselves to examine.
